Authentication

No authentication is used when accessing public APIs or endpoints that don't require user identification or authorization.

Use Cases:

• Public APIs with open access.

• Endpoints serving non-sensitive data.

Security Considerations:

• No security measures; anyone can access the resource.

• Not suitable for sensitive or user-specific data.

Basic Authentication involves sending a username and password with each HTTP request. The credentials are typically base64-encoded and included in the Authorization header.

Use Cases:

• Internal applications or services.

• Quick testing or prototyping.

Security Considerations:

• Credentials are sent with every request, increasing the risk of interception.

• Base64 encoding is not encryption; credentials can be easily decoded.

• Not recommended for production environments without HTTPS.

Designed for applications that run in a user's browser (e.g., single-page applications). The access token is returned directly without an intermediate authorization code.

Use Cases:

• Single-page applications (SPAs).

• Applications with limited backend capabilities.

Security Considerations:

• Access token is exposed in the URL fragment, making it susceptible to interception.

• Not recommended for applications handling sensitive data.

• Considered less secure, its use is being deprecated in favor of Authorization Code with PKCE.

OAuth 2.0 is an authorization framework that allows third-party applications to obtain limited access to user resources without exposing user credentials.

Authorization Code Grant

Used by applications that can securely store client secrets. The client redirects the user to the authorization server, where the user grants permission. The server then redirects back with an authorization code, which the client exchanges for an access token.

Use Cases:

• Web applications with server-side components.

• Applications requiring long-lived access.

Security Considerations:

• The authorization code is short-lived and exchanged for a token.

• Client secrets are not exposed to the user.

• Recommended for most applications due to its security features.

 The Client Credentials grant type in OAuth 2.0 is used to obtain an access token with users' client ID and secret. 

• Client application is registered with the OAuth 2.0 service provider. 

• During registration, the client receives a Client ID and a Client Secret.

• If the authentication is successful, the server issues an access token to the client application

This grant type in OAuth 2.0 involves exchanging a user's username and password directly for an access token.
